Each missionary's support goal is made of many "building blocks." Therefore, it is safe to assume that your support goal will be larger than the salary listed on your offer.

Here's a snapshot of how all those pieces work together to build your support goal:

  • Salary — this is the main building block to your support goal. Your offered salary (found in the details of your offer or compensation notice) is the limit to the amount of salary you can receive. However, you are allowed to accept a lower amount of salary than what is offered.
  • Ministry Expenses — this includes a monthly ministry expense bonus (which you can elect to receive as part of your paycheck), in addition to any reimbursable ministry expenses (which you can submit as needed).
  • Administrative Assessment — Reliant's administrative assessment is right around a tithe (10%) of the gifts Reliant missionaries raise. Most gifts that come into the MTD account you are responsible for will be assessed at 12%. However, most missionaries (depending on your program) may choose a Sponsor Church, which is assessed at 3%. The average of the 12% gifts and the 3% sponsor church gifts is right around 10%
  • Attrition Buffer — data shows that a percentage of donors will discontinue giving within the first few years of a missionary's employment. Therefore, every missionary's support goal includes an attrition buffer to plan for future attrition.
  • Insurances — This includes benefits such as health insurance premiums and other employment insurances.
  • 401(k) — eligible employees can make contributions to this retirement savings account 1 year from their official hire date and can plan for this amount in the support goal.
  • Taxes
    • Social Security/Medicare: Provides income and health insurance to the elderly & disabled.
      • Everyone pays the same
      • 7.65% Employer Portion
      • 7.65% Employee Portion
      • = about 15% added to Support Goal
    • Federal Income Tax: Pays for Government, Military, NASA, FDA, etc.
      • Based on Income & Deductions
      • Research Foreign Income Exclusion
      • If you overpay, you’ll get a refund
      • Usually 10, 12, or 22%
  • No labels

  1. I like this a lot, as I think it is a good visual for people. Here are a couple of changes I could not make, since the picture is not editable.

    • Attrition buffer: Let's take out the percentages for the attrition buffer. With 1 year, fixed term people we are planning on lowering that percentage. It may even be a flexible percentage based on where they are in the residency.
    • Administrative Assessment: Let's also take out 12% on the picture. we explain it better below.

Done! Thanks for the feedback Mike. Unknown User (ed.courtney@reliant.org), would you be able to move this page into the Field Manual so it can go through an approval flow and be published for others outside the office to see?
