This page outlines different benefits & insurance protections offered by Reliant. For more specific information, see the Insurance section.

Insurances

Domestic Medical insurance (with Prescription Coverage, excludes HI)

Reliant extends medical insurance coverage of the group health plan benefit to all full-time employees or those working 30 hours or more per week. All eligible employees can enroll their eligible dependents (see: Adding a Dependent to Insurance). To waive extended coverage, see Insurance Waiver Options.

Part-time employees who average less than 30 hours per week are not eligible to participate in the group health plan.

Questions about specific coverage or conditions may be found in the employee’s certificate of group insurance provided by the insurance carrier or by calling the insurance company directly.

Hawaii Employees

Reliant employees living and working in Hawaii are covered under a Hawaii State-approved ACA plan with UHA.  Employees in Hawaii are eligible for benefits at 20 hours, per the State of Hawaii’s ACA guidelines.  For more information about this plan, email benefits@reliant.org.

Domestic Medical Insurance - Hawaii (with Prescription Coverage)

Employees are eligible for coverage (based on Hawaii's ACA guidelines) after they have worked 20 hours or more per week for 4 weeks.  This is DIFFERENT than Reliant's normal eligibility of employees working 30 hours or more having coverage offered the day of their hire.

International Medical, Dental and Vision Insurance (with Prescription Coverage)

International workers who are employed at 30 or more hours per week are eligible to enroll in Reliant's current International Insurance plan prior to departing for their international ministry location. This coverage continues after an international worker returns to the U.S. (with the intent of staying in the U.S.).

Domestic Dental Insurance

Reliant's Dental Insurance is available to any employee who works 30 hours or more. It is also available to your dependents, through the month of their 26th birthday. This dental offering allows quality care for dental needs, and Reliant recommends you utilize this benefit from the beginning of your employment.

Vision Insurance

Vision insurance through EyeMed is optional. This insurance is available to ALL U.S. field workers, regardless of hours worked. In other words, you can be either a full-time or part-time staff and still elect EyeMed Vision Insurance. The premiums are paid by the field staff pre-tax through the Reliant Cafeteria Plan. The monthly insurance premiums will be deducted from field staff paychecks. Coverage is optional. Enrollment in Vision Insurance is made each year using the Cafeteria Plan Form.

Group life and Voluntary life insurance

Group Life Insurance

Reliant provides group term life insurance for all field workers and employees working 30 hours per week or more. This insurance is mandatory coverage and cannot be waived.  The standard amount of insurance is the equivalent of one year's salary. Coverage begins on the first day of the full month following the date when the employee became eligible for coverage. This insurance pays out to a beneficiary, designated by the employee, in the event of the eligible employee's death. Reliant secures this insurance on the employee's behalf. The employee is responsible to provide current beneficiary information. Contact Employment Services for information about this benefit.

Voluntary Life Insurance

Reliant field workers working 30 hours per week or more may voluntarily purchase additional life insurance through RSLI if they wish. They may also voluntarily purchase life insurance for their spouse and dependents. The premiums for Voluntary LIfe are deducted from the employee's paycheck each month. Once purchased, Reliant will continue to maintain the policy unless and until the field worker asks for a change. field workers that are eligible for this benefit may seek changes during Open Enrollment. See Voluntary Life Rate Schedule (PDF) for more information. Rates change annually and vary depending on the age of the person covered.

RSLI guarantees Voluntary Life insurance without proof of insurability up to $100,000 for newly hired/benefits eligible employees, $30,000 for spousal coverage, and up to a maximum of $10,000 for children age 6 months-26 years when the enrollment occurs within 31 days of the hire or becoming benefits-eligible. For greater amounts of coverage, RSLI may seek evidence of insurability. Contact Employment Services for information about this benefit. To add coverage for dependents - see Adding a Dependent to Insurance.

Life Insurance Beneficiaries

Employees are responsible to maintain up-to-date beneficiary information by informing benefits@reliant.org. An employee may change their beneficiary by completing a new beneficiary form and emailing it to benefits@reliant.org. If the employee is married and wishes to have a beneficiary other than their spouse, the spouse must sign the beneficiary form. To complete a new Beneficiary form see Updating Beneficiary Information - Life Insurance.

Making a claim

Written verification of death within 90 days of the date of death is normally required by the insurance provider. Employment Services must be notified immediately in the event an employee dies. Specific information about this coverage may be found in the employee's certificate of group insurance provided by the insurance carrier or by calling the insurance company directly.

Accidental Death and Dismemberment insurance

Reliant provides an accidental death and dismemberment insurance policy in the event that an eligible employee loses life or limb resulting from an accident, subject to benefit limitations. Full-time employees are eligible for coverage. Part-time employees who average less than 30 hours per week are not eligible for this benefit. Coverage begins the first day of the month following the month that eligibility began. Specific information about this coverage may be found in the employee's certificate of group insurance provided by the insurance carrier or by calling the insurance company directly.

Long-term disability insurance

In the unfortunate event that an eligible employee becomes disabled, Reliant provides financial assistance through a long-term disability insurance plan. Full-time employees are eligible for coverage. Part-time employees who average less than 30 hours per week are not eligible for this benefit. There is a 90-day waiting period before the benefit may begin once a disabling incident occurs. An employee must notify Employment Services (benefits@reliant.org) as soon as possible when they sustain an injury that may be disabling. Specific information about this coverage may be found in the employee's certificate of group insurance provided by the insurance carrier or by calling the insurance company directly.

Unemployment compensation insurance

Reliant is exempt from paying into the Federal Unemployment system. In addition, in many states, Reliant is also exempt from paying into State unemployment compensation systems.

Therefore, employees of Reliant may not be eligible to receive compensation from governmental unemployment insurance programs after leaving their employment with Reliant. In the case of an unemployment claim being reported to Reliant, Reliant will submit all required paperwork to the governmental agency.  However, the determination of benefits eligibility will be fully handled by the requesting governmental agency.

Workers compensation insurance

Employees who are injured or become ill due to their employment may have some of their medical care costs covered under the worker's compensation program. Workers Compensation programs vary by state.

Any employee who is injured while performing ministry responsibilities should seek appropriate medical care and then report their injury to their supervisor and Employment Services as soon as possible.

See the additional information provided below for receiving care and reporting your injury, based on the specific state/location in which you normally work.

Continuation of insurance coverage

Continuation of coverage generally allows certain qualified beneficiaries to continue temporary access to affordable health insurance in situations where they would otherwise lose their employer-provided coverage. Please see the pages linked below for detailed information about continuance with Medical, Dental, and Vision group insurances.

Other Benefits/Coverage

Short-term disability coverage

General Policy

Benefits-eligible employees (working 30 or more hours per week) are eligible for Short-Term Disability benefits through the salary continuation model due to a serious health condition that prevents them from fulfilling their job responsibilities. Salary continuation will be dependent upon available funds in the Reliant account for which the employee is responsible. Part-time employees who average less than 30 hours per week are not eligible for this benefit.

Employees who qualify for Short-Term Disability coverage are eligible to receive 66% (2/3) of their regular wages and to have their health insurance benefits continued and paid by Reliant. Additional pay may be received if the employee utilizes PTO to supplement their wages for the period of time they are receiving Short-Term Disability pay. There is a 2-week (14 calendar days) waiting period before Short-Term Disability begins. PTO may be used toward the 2-week waiting period.

The maximum length of Short-Term Disability coverage is 90 days, at which time the employee may qualify for Long-Term Disability coverage. After 90 days, the employee will no longer be eligible for salary continuation or health insurance benefits, except as provided for in the Long-Term Disability coverage and health care continuation coverage. In the event the employee does not qualify for Short-Term Disability coverage, the employee may still be eligible for up to twelve weeks of unpaid leave. See Leave of Absence for more information.

Since you cannot work, ME Bonuses and Cell Phone Bonuses are suspended while on Short-Term Disability for months you work less than half of a calendar month/pay period.

Child-Care Benefit

This benefit is part of Reliant's Cafeteria plan

For a full description of this benefit, see Child-Care Benefit.

HSA Account & Annual Elections

Employees enrolled in Reliant's Domestic Medical High Deductible Plans are eligible to open up a Health Savings account.

A Health Savings Account, often called an HSA, is a type of bank account specifically for individuals covered by high deductible plans, like those offered by Reliant. You can contribute to this plan tax-free, and the annual amount contributed to HSA is reported to the IRS each year with your tax return. The funds can be used for any legitimate medical expenses at any time in the future. You can pay for qualified health expenses now, as well as pay for future health expenses on a tax-advantaged basis. The funds in this HSA belong to you even beyond your employment with Reliant.

There are two types of HSA contributions that Reliant offers employees:

  • Employer Contributions - This contribution comes from non-MTD Reliant funds. Reliant leadership sets the Employer contribution rate each year, and it is the same for all field workers based on their coverage level. Current contribution rates can be found here - HSA - Health Savings Account
  • Employee Contributions - This contribution is deducted from your paycheck each month. This benefit is part of Reliant's Cafeteria plan

For more information on Health Savings Accounts and Health Savings Account Contributions - See HSA - Health Savings Account

Employment Insurances

Reliant carries numerous employer liability policies such as sexual harassment coverage, travel /accident liability coverage, and other miscellaneous coverage(s) to protect Reliant in the case of legal action that may be taken against the ministry. The premiums for these insurances are paid for using the Employment Insurance charge to the MTD account.  That charge occurs monthly, and it is based on the employee's salary (including parsonage)/hourly wages for that pay period.

The employment insurance rate is calculated yearly based on Reliant's expected expenses for these insurance policies, but it is typically under 2%. Please ask your program team for more information on this year's percentage.

Retirement Plan

401(k) Retirement Savings Plan

Employees who have worked for Reliant for at least 1 year are eligible to begin participating in the 401(k) plan. Upon becoming eligible to participate, employees will be auto-enrolled in the 401(k) plan at a $50 contribution amount.

  1. Dave Meldrum-Green - should we add something about the insurance we provide that protects counselors from liability?

  2. let me think about that....

  3. Unknown User (ed.courtney@reliant.org)

Mike Swann I moved all the descriptions of the insurances to the actual insurance pages in the Insurance space. I think missionaries will more naturally look there. We can beef up the info at the top of this page if you think it needs that. I can always go back to the earlier version of this page if you prefer.

  4. Unknown User (ed.courtney@reliant.org) and Dave Meldrum-Green - I mention it on the counseling page but we get the question a lot so it might be worth linking the Licensed Counselors & Coaches Professional Revenue Agreement somewhere above, which clarifies their liability as counselor when working for Reliant is covered by our provided coverage. Oh wait, I think this is a page for different types of insurance - Do we have a page discussing the liability insurance protection we provide?

    1. We currently don't have a page on this liability insurance. I do have a copy of our latest policy that we could post on Solomon though.

      1. Dave Meldrum-Green- What might be more helpful is a list of the different liability insurances we offer with a short description of what tht trype of insurance is for.

  5. Dave Meldrum-GreenBarb Seckler and user-1a794

I'm not sure this page is helpful. It is all repeated in the insurance section. It is a small overview, but I don't think we need it in missionary policies. Thoughts?

    1. I like it Mike. I think its helpful. I can try to add some of our other corporate liability insurances maybe as a child page to this since this mainly deals with insurances that are far more relevant day to day for our employees. Thoughts?

      1. Dave Meldrum-Green, now that the page looks better, that would be fine to add those on.

  6. It does define who can get what coverage... so maybe it's helpful

  7. Dave Meldrum-Green, the reason I asked is because we have the entire Insurance section that is massive in scope, so I am wondering if this should be a short review page or just taken out entirely.

    1. Mike Swann, I like it the way it is. Let's just keep it that way. I can always create a brand new page for corporate insurances.

  8. Unknown User (ed.courtney@reliant.org)

I reformatted this page so it's not so overwhelming. Now missionaries can just click on the insurance area they are interested in reading more about.

  9. Thanks Ed, this looks great!

  10. Kaitlin Hughes Hey! I saw this was a "page include" page and I'm not sure where the original content lives. Would you be able to edit the original page to ensure the term missionary is changed to employee? OR if I am able to edit the original page depending on where it's located, could you send me that way and I can make the edits if that would be ideal?
