Historically Reliant has never viewed formal seminary education as a requirement for ministry or pastoral ministry. We retain that general view: We resist the worst of the American cultural view of a professional clergy who are trained and viewed similarly as doctors or lawyers, with a professional degree but perhaps little personal experience or personal faith. We view lived spiritual formation and ministry experience under mentors as essential.
However, we do value academic theological training. So we affirm that these families of degrees can be a valuable asset for candidates in ministry, and especially pastoral candidates

  • Masters of Divinity degree (comprehensive professional degree including practical and biblical languages; usually between 84-120 credits)
  • Masters of Arts in Christian Ministry or similar (MA Religion, MA Christian Education, MA Spiritual Formation, etc) (Ministry and practically oriented; usually between 20-60 credits)
  • Master of Arts in Theology, Church History, Biblical Studies (technically oriented and more academic; usually between 40-80 credits)
  • Bachelor of Arts in Bible or Christian Ministry or Youth Ministry. Undergraduate degree from a Christian undergraduate school (not a seminary). Usually between 80-120 undergraduate credits.
  • Certificate of Study. Many traditional seminaries offer certificates for a semester or year's worth of study.

Non-traditional pastor training programs may involved a blend of practical, mentored ministry and seminary education. These seem particularly effective, and we value them.

IDEAL

  • Four-year undergraduate degree
  • Some documented training in Biblical studies, theology, and/or ministry

AREA OF CONCERN

  • Applicant has not completed a four-year undergraduate degree
    • This is a significant concern if a current college student is dropping out of school or not completing his or her degree before seeking full-time ministry. This may be short-sighted and is not encouraged.
  • Pastor or Church Planter: has no documented theological or ministry training.
