Historically Reliant has never viewed formal seminary education as a requirement for ministry or pastoral ministry. We retain that general view: We resist the worst of the American cultural view of a professional clergy who are trained and viewed similarly as doctors or lawyers, with a professional degree but perhaps little personal experience or personal faith. We view lived spiritual formation and ministry experience under mentors as essential.
However, we do value academic theological training. So we affirm that these families of degrees can be a valuable asset for candidates in ministry, and especially pastoral candidates

Non-traditional pastor training programs may involved a blend of practical, mentored ministry and seminary education. These seem particularly effective, and we value them.
