  • You can use the following script for both a phone call or a text message. If calling someone, we recommend having this script in front of you the first few times to help you remember what to say. And please feel free to tweak these scripts a bit to make them sound more like YOU!

Phone Call:

Hello. Is this (potential donor)?

Yes.

My name is <your name>. I am a friend of <name of referer> - we go to Super Cool Church together! Did he/she mention I’d be calling?

Yes!

OK. Great!

No, they didn't.

Oh no! Sorry about that! Well, did I catch you at a bad time?

No.

Actually, Yes. → I'm so sorry about that. When is a better time for me to call back? From here, work with the person to find a good time to reach out again.

If they said now's a good time to talk → Great! As I said, my name is ______, and I met up with <referer> a couple of days/weeks ago and got to share with them about the ministry I’m involved with at ____________.  Our ministry thrives off other people who support what we do, and after sharing with <referer>, he/she thought you would be excited to hear my story and what God is doing at ______! Is there a day next week that works for you?

If the referral doesn't answer, either leave a message:

Hi! This message is for _______. My name is ______, and I met up with <referer> a couple of days/weeks ago and got to share with them about the ministry I’m involved with at ____________.  He/she thought you would be excited to hear my story! I would love to find a time to get together and share with you about what God is doing at ______. Feel free to call me back, but if we don't connect in the next few days, I'll try you again! Have a great day!

    Here's my script ... 

     

    Hi, is this Ray Aiello?  ("may I speak with.." is for 1970's landlines that serving many family members.  We are now calling numbers that belong to individuals. Now I just want to confirm that I have the right person and set the stage for an introduction,  being respectful and cheerful.)  

    Yes ... ??? 

    Hi, Ray, This is Cori Crawford. We haven't met before (smile) but Susie Smith suggested I call you.  Susie partners with a ministry I have at Florida State University and she felt you would be encouraged to hear what God is doing at FSU. (smile and slow down slightly...)   I'm calling today to see I could arrange a time to meet with you and tell you about my ministry. Would you be up for meeting?

    pause for response: 

    a) "hmm, what would that be like? I"m not sure what you are asking. "

    "(smile) Sure, I get that.  I was hoping I could meet you, perhaps for a coffee or at your office or anyplace convenient, and tell you about the ministry I serve with at FSU through Great Commission Church.  Susie mentioned you became a Christian at FSU, and she thought you would be encouraged to hear how we are reaching students who go there now.   (pause again) ..  Would there be a time next week that I could drop by your office and tell you more about what god is doing in our ministry? 

     

    c) "yeah, i'd love to meet. Susie told me you would be calling. " 

    "Great, thanks so much for that.  what sounds easy for you?  Maybe a coffee shop near your office?  or somewhere at your office maybe? (pause)

     

    c) "wow, you caught me at a moment when I can't really respond". 

    Sorry for my timing!  I can call you back a little later,  would you suggest a better time?  (pause)
