Emotional & Spiritual Safety
Just as leaders have a responsibility for the physical safety of employees and volunteers, the emotional and spiritual safety of your entire team must be a high priority. Working in a ministry setting is a unique employment experience, whether you work 5 hours a week or 50. High levels of stress and burnout are prevalent among those in ministry. The immensely personal nature of the work may lead to blurred relational boundaries, unreasonable expectations of staff, and even spiritual and emotional abuse. Caring for the safety of your staff is essential for a effective and fruitful ministry.
Some strategies for keeping your work/ministry environment safe and healthy:
- Focus on your emotional and spiritual health as a leader
- Foster routine, open, and transparent communication with your team members about work pressures, frustrations, and barriers
- Recognize and reward the hard work of your team
- Encourage a healthy work-life balance and model it yourself
- Promote a regular Sabbath observation
- Address team member's concerns about an unhealthy or unsafe environment promptly and appropriately
