The Affordable Care Act (ACA) signed into law in 2010 requires health Plans plans to cover breastfeeding support and supplies.  The in-network provider of breast pumps for Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield Plans is through CareCentrix, which uses a special support website and phone line for plan members to order Medela breast pumps.  If you want another brand of breast pump, you may need to contcat contact CareCentrix at 877-561-9910 to discuss your benefit options.

 Things to know before you request a breast pump:

  • When completeing the online request, you must answer "yes" to one of these options to be eligible for this benefit.  

Have you done one of the following: 1) registered with a hospital for delivery, 2) plan on registering for delivery, 3) plan on utliziing a birthing center or mid-wife, or 4) already delivered?

  • You will also need to provide the NPI (National Provider Identifier) for your Doctor.  This number is used by Medela to obtain a prescription for your breast pump.

  • Breast Pumps will be delivered to your home address.  You will have the option to add on additional accessories for an extra charge.  Some of these additional costs may be paid for using a HSA account.  The IRS allows HSA accounts to be used towards  "the cost of breast pumps and supplies that assist lactation" see Publication 502 Medical and Dental Expenses.
