Q: A donor prefers to give by check. What do I do?

A: First, remember to thank them!

Make sure the check is made out to Reliant with your name and fund number included in the memo line. Encourage donors to send checks directly to Reliant.

Gift Services needs to receive the following required donor information associated with the check gift, ideally before receiving the check:

  • Name
  • Mailing Address
  • Fund # for application
  • One-Time or Recurring Frequency (monthly, annually, etc.)

Here are a few ways to submit this information:

  • The donor can sign up on Reliant.org to start a new recurring gift. This is the Reliant preferred method.
  • The donor can fill out the How To Start Giving card and include it with their check sent directly to Reliant.
  • The missionary can fill out a New Promise Form on Toolbox and click the Notify Gift Services button.

Donors receive a receipt with a tear-off portion at the bottom that they can send with their next check donation. Example:

Q: What if the donor gave the first check directly to me?

A: The missionary can fill out a New Promise Form on Toolbox and mail the form and check to Reliant or click the Notify Gift Services button if the donor wants to mail the check to Reliant themselves.

Q: Can I send Reliant more than one check and New Gift Form at a time?

A: Yes. You can usually fit four New Gift Forms and four checks in an envelope for the cost of a regular stamp. If you have more than four checks, consider using a large envelope, which costs less than sending multiple smaller envelopes.

Q: Where do I send the checks and New Gift Forms?

A: Mail the checks to Reliant-MTD, 11002 Lake Hart Dr., Ste. 100, Orlando, FL 32832-7106

Q: What if the check is made out to me instead of Reliant?

A: First, ask them to rewrite it to Reliant. If you can’t get them to re-write it...

  • Go somewhere you can get a money order. If you go to the post office, 7- Eleven, Walgreens, CVS, Kroger, Walmart, Amscot, etc. and if you have a check, you will need to first deposit the check into your bank account and then pay for the money order with cash or a debit card. If you go to your bank with a check, you will need to deposit the check into your own account and get a money order or cashier's check, depending on the amount.
  • There will typically be a small fee for the money order, but make sure the money order amount is for the same amount that the donor gave and pay the fee yourself. You may submit a reimbursement for the fee.
  • Have them give you a money order made out to Reliant Mission, or you may write "Reliant Mission" in the Pay To space. There may also be a space to add in Reliant's address as well (11002 Lake Hart Dr., Ste. 100, Orlando, FL 32832).
  • In the From or Sender space, write the donor's name and address.
  • In the memo section, write your Reliant Mission Fund Number.
  • If there is a signature spot on the front of the money order, sign there. Do not sign the back of the money order.
  • Tear off the receipt and keep it in case your money order gets lost.

Complete and print a New Promise Form on Toolbox, select the Notify Gift Services button, and mail the money order to Reliant.

Kathy Zellinger Here's a page I created about what to do when a missionary receives a check. Is there anything incorrect or that you think should be added?

  2. Unknown User (ed.courtney@reliant.org)

Mike Swann Can you look over this when you get a chance?

  3. Someone sent a missionary a check to buy a new laptop. Does that $ need to go to Reliant?

What if the donor just bought the laptop and gave it to the missionary?

I know there are policies about this, but I'm not finding them.

  4. user-ca312

Mike Swann - Should all the other liaisons be added under the Questions? section?

  5. That looks great. Yes user-ca312 - Let's add in the list of all the liaisons here.

  6. user-ca312

Mike Swann- Looks like we are still missing the other liaisons on this page. (wink)

  7. Deborah Kennedy - other pages we have used have the liaisons going across so they are one line. I believe Caleb Hayworth has done this a lot, as well as I think user-ca312 has added these too. I think that would look cleaner.

  8. Is there a way for missionaries to access the new gift form through Toolbox?

    1. Unfortunately there is not a Toolbox replacement or alternative idea for check giving quite yet.
