Age 55 or Older Additional Contribution Details

HSA enrollees who are age 55 or older can contribute an extra $1,000 "catch-up contribution" annually to their HSAs. The catch-up contribution can be made during the year (prior to their birthday) by account holders who will turn 55 by year-end.

The IRS publishes an annual HSA contribution maximum each year.  Although the amounts the IRS publishes are annual amounts, the amount an employee can contribute to the HSA tax-free is based on a pro-rated, per month calculation.  An employee is eligible for 1/12th of the annual maximum contribution for every month during the calendar year in which they were covered by medical insurance.

If you had medical benefits for all 12 months, you are eligible for the full maximum HSA contribution. If you had benefits for 6 months, you are eligible to contribute half the annual limit. If an employee's HSA contributions for a year exceed the pro-rated amount for which they were eligible to contribute to an HSA, they will be responsible to pay taxes on the excess HSA contribution amount as well as a 6% penalty.

Contributions, earnings, and distributions (when used to pay for qualified health expenses) are 100% exempt from federal income tax and FICA tax.

  1. FYI Tonya Bartels and Sarah Swann - I added this page and linked to it on the page HSA - Health Savings Account. This is how we do the 401(K) limits so I copied that format to be consistent.

    1. That is awesome Barb Seckler.  Sarah and I were looking for this information the other day.  Do you think we should excerpt this to the Cafeteria Form Page and the HSA Contributions page under medical insurance?

      1. Sarah Swann next week sometime would you have time to do the excerpts Tonya mentioned here?  That would be  super helpful!

  2. Tonya Bartels, are you good with this page being updated in 2024 limits? Or waiting until later in the year? I just noticed that some OE pages are linked to this page.

    1. This is one of the pages I update on the last day of the year that I am working in the current year. The new numbers are on this page 2024 HSA Contribution, I would be curious what links are coming here, I think the OE page has more information on it. All that being said I am totally fine with adding the 2024 information now instead of waiting Julie Thomas

      1. I added it and published the page.
