Two weeks ago, we sent out a 403(b) Retirement Saving Month email with this year's theme based on driving and shared the 403(b) Month – Keys to Retirement Checklist. Today we have a new challenge for you.
We started with this idea:
Your retirement journey begins with knowing where you want to go.
But even with a destination in mind, sometimes we need to ask for directions—whether from a trusted person or a GPS—to help us get there.
Road-tested lessons from those further down the retirement highway
A recent article from U.S. News & World Report shared the top 10 regrets retirees have when reflecting on their financial journey.
Here’s a quick summary:
- Not saving more – Many wish they had consistently saved 10% or more of their income.
- Saying yes too often – saying no now can be a powerful yes to your long-term goals.
- Ignoring inflation – Rising costs caught many off guard.
- Waiting too long to plan – Delayed planning meant missed growth opportunities.
- Underestimating health care costs – Medicare doesn’t cover everything.
- Skipping long-term care insurance – Many regret not securing coverage earlier.
- Keeping two homes – Managing multiple properties proved costly.
- Investing improperly – Some wish they had used Roth accounts or worked with a financial planner.
- Claiming Social Security too early – Early claims led to reduced benefits.
- Retiring too soon – Many wish they had worked longer to boost savings.
