6 months out
  • Talk with your supervisor to confirm approximate dates
  • Connect with your Sending Church and let them know your projected timeline
  • Notify Reliant by filling out the Furlough Request Form
5 months out
  • Review your current support goal and account balance and begin setting goals for MTD while stateside.
  • Decide if you would like to do a Debrief at MTI or CIT, or a spiritual retreat at another location. Find out specific dates and register to ensure you have a spot.
  • Consider setting aside a week of vacation, usually toward the beginning or end of your furlough, that you can rest or enjoy family or friends.
4 months out
  • Make a list of different cities that you plan to visit. Begin reaching out to key people in those cities to find out if there are potential conflicts.
  • As you hear back from key people, begin working on an itinerary.
  • Think through housing and vehicle needs based on your itinerary. Contact your sending church or other ministry partners that you think may be able to help.
  • If you have school-age children, begin making a plan for any educational needs during the home assignment.
3 months out
  • Begin communicating with your ministry partners that you are headed to the States! Let them know when you will be in specific cities so that you can begin planning meet-ups well ahead of time.
  • Start planning and purchasing special gifts from your host country for your ministry partners or friends and family that you can bring back.
  • If you plan to schedule medical appointments while in the US, get them on the calendar! Try to schedule them for the front end, in case follow-up visits are necessary.
2 months out
  • Lists, Lists, Lists :
    • Make a list of any fun, bucket-list items you would like to do while you are in the US. Definitely include kids and consider letting everyone pick a fun thing.
    • Make a list of things you would like to purchase in the US to bring back with you.
    • Make a list of anything you need to set in order in your host country before leaving (and begin working on those items!)
  • Work on a slide show or video that you would like to use for presentations in the US.
  • Design an updated prayer/photo card to pass out to partners.
1 month out
  • Start packing!
  • Leave plenty of space on your calendar for meeting up with friends who you want to see one last time before you leave.
  • Schedule a Check-in Call with Reliant.
  • Confirm logistics for housing and transportation when you arrive in the US.
