A qualifying event is a change in your life that makes you eligible for a special enrollment period to make changes to your health coverage, such as enrolling your spouse and/or newborn or changing your coverage type. If your family status changes, you can enroll (or remove) your spouse, newborn, and any other eligible dependents to your insurance plan as special enrollees if any of one of these qualifying events occurs:

  • Marriage
  • Birth of a newborn
  • Adoption, or placement of a child in your home for adoption
  • Death
  • Loss of coverage - If you were covered on your parent's or spouse's employer's group plan and they had a loss or change of employment that caused you to lose your coverage.

To enroll your dependents under your medical, dental or vision insurance, you must:

  • Enroll them within 60 days of the event - this includes the time to collect and submit the enrollment forms to the insurance company.
  • Coverage is effective the date of the Qualifying Event.
  •  Once you add any eligible dependents to your insurance plan, no further changes can be made until the next open enrollment period. If your spouse would become employed and gain insurance of their own, they would need to review Insurance Waiver Options and would not be eligible to participate in the plan until the next open enrollment period or another qualifying event.

You may also change your insurance plan coverage during this qualifying event time. Please contact Office HR at office.employment@reliant.org to verify that any costs (deductibles met under your current plan) would transfer to the new plan. It seems that not all costs incurred would transfer depending on the situation, please seek clarification prior to finalizing your decision.

To enroll a child on your dental insurance, you must:

  • Couples may add a baby now or later. Your newborn is covered automatically whether you enroll or not for the first 18 months since babies don’t usually have teeth, nor do they need coverage.
  • The enrollment may occur any time between 18 months and 31 days after the 3rd birthday to enroll the newborn for coverage.
  • Coverage is effective on the date of the qualifying event, which is either the date of birth if enrolled at birth, or the 3rd birthday if enrolled at that time.
