Dear Mr. and Mrs. Johnson, How are you? I thought of you a lot this last week. How was Leslie’s wedding? I wish I could have been there. I’m looking forward to seeing the pictures when I get home next month. I’m writing to bring you up to date on what is happening in my life. As you may be aware, I am attending college at (name of school). There I have become very involved with my local student church, and I have grown in my desire to invest my life in helping meet people’s deepest needs. I’ve noticed many of the broken lives here at our university—hurting from career obsession, alcohol abuse, and empty relationships—and know Jesus Christ is the answer. This summer, I have an opportunity to be an intern in missions work with Reliant. (Reliant is the new name for Great Commission Ministries.) As an intern with Reliant partnered with my student ministry, I will be working in Virginia Beach, VA, and taking part in a Leadership Training Program where over one hundred college students from around the country will gather for the summer. I will learn and lead in both evangelism—seeking to win people to Christ—and discipleship—building up Christians in their walk with Christ. This means developing deep friendships, studying the Bible, investing in small groups, worshiping in large group and plenty of social activities. All the while, I’ll have the chance to learn from experience fulltime workers in campus ministry. I expect this summer will be a powerful investment of my time and energy as I train in gospel work. And I hope God will use this summer to show me whether fulltime ministry is His calling for the rest of my life. It was great reconnecting and catching up with you recently. Congratulations again on becoming grandparents for the first time! As you may know, I am a student at the University of Michigan, currently in my third year in the mechanical engineering program. Early on at my time at UM, I was invited to attend a college church called New Life. From the first gathering I knew it would be my community while in college and it has definitely become that. I have made such great friends there who share my heart to walk with God and be developed as a leader. Last year I had the opportunity to serve as a small group leader and currently I have been invited to serve as an intern with the church. New Life believes the college campus is an urgent and critical mission field with the potential for massive gospel impact. For over 25 years the church has been committed to developing disciples of Jesus and leaders who are sent all over the world to represent Christ and his Kingdom. In my role as an intern, I will be assisting the pastors and staff in developing new evangelism initiatives designed to broaden the reach of the church into new areas and people groups at UM. I will also be helping to lead a course that trains students on how to share the gospel with others, as well as continuing to serve as a group leader and mentor younger men in the church. Why serve as an intern? Great question! I have absolutely loved being a student leader and I view this internship as a way to make a bigger commitment to serving God and the Church. Plus, part of the internship experience is focused on my own development as a leader. Staff from New Life will spend dedicated time each week investing in my spiritual formation and growth. More than anything, I simply want to give back as best I can to the church that has been so impactful in my own story of following Jesus! In order to make this experience possible, my church partners with Reliant Mission, a Christian nonprofit organization with 40 years of experience mobilizing men and women for gospel work both internationally and here in the states. As I pursue this internship, I am developing a team of people who will financially partner with Reliant on my behalf. I am trusting God to provide partners who invest gifts ranging from $100 to $1,000 or more. I am hoping to average $250 per gift in order to be fully funded before the start of my internship in August. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson, will you prayerfully consider giving to Reliant to meet this need? Together with 100 other students from collegiate churches like New Life, I spent almost three months being developed as leader with the skills and character to make an influence for God’s Kingdom, all with Rocky Mountain National Park as the backdrop! This summer I have been invited to return to Colorado to serve the LT program as a full-time intern! My own experience at LT was so impactful in my own spiritual formation that I jumped at the chance to return. As an intern, I will be working alongside the directors and staff of the LT program to craft a summer that positions many college students to experience God and grow in their faith. Some of my key roles will include leading small groups, mentoring those serving as student leaders in the program, and coordinating outreach events. Why serve as an intern? Great question! Having now been a participant in LT, I want to help position other students to be transformed by God. Something powerful happens when young people commit to living in community in the place like Colorado, and, honestly, I simply want to be a part of that. Plus, part of the internship experience is focused on my own development as a leader. Staff from the LT program will spend dedicated time each week investing in my spiritual formation and growth.
