titleCoinsurance

A certain percentage you must pay each benefit period after you have paid your deductible. This payment is for covered services only. You may still have to pay a copay.

Example: Your plan might cover 80 percent of your medical bill. You will have to pay the other 20 percent. The 20 percent is the coinsurance.

titleCo-Pay

You must pay a fixed amount of money each time you visit the doctor or purchase medication. This amount will vary depending on where you go for care, the type of doctor you see, and the kind of medicine you need. Not all plans have copays.

UI Expand
titleDeductible

A specified amount of money that you must pay before your insurance coverage kicks in. Typically, the higher your deductible amount is, the lower your monthly premiums are.

Example: If your plan has a $2,000 annual deductible, you will be expected to pay the first $2,000 toward your healthcare services. After you reach $2,000, your health insurer will cover a higher % up to 100% of the costs (amounts vary based on the specific plan selected).

titleHealth Savings Account (HSA)

An account that lets you save for future medical costs. Money put in the account is not subject to federal income tax when deposited. Funds can build up and be used year to year. They are not required to be spent in a single year. HSAs must be paired with certain high-deductible health insurance plans (HDHP).  Both the employee and employer may contribute to this type of account.

titleIn/Out-Of-Network Providers

Most health insurance carriers have agreements with specific healthcare providers or groups of healthcare providers to offer services to their members at a set rate. Those health care providers are referred to as "in-network." Some insurance plans will require you to use in-network providers to get special rates for services. If you use providers that are not part of the carrier's network, they are called "out of network," and you will usually have to pay more for their services.

titleOut-of-Pocket Maximum

The maximum amount of money you will pay throughout the plan year. After you reach the maximum, your insurance will pay 100% of the cost of care up to your plan maximum.
