Dear Mr. and Mrs. Johnson,

How are you? I thought of you a lot this last week. How was Leslie’s wedding? I wish I could have been there. I’m looking forward to seeing the pictures when I get home next month.

I’m writing to bring you up to date on what is happening in my life. As you may be aware, I am attending college at (name of school). There I have become very involved with my local student church, and I have grown in my desire to invest my life in helping meet people’s deepest needs. I’ve noticed many of the broken lives here at our university — hurting from career obsession, alcohol abuse and empty relationships — and know Jesus Christ is the answer.

This summer I have an opportunity to be an intern in missions work with my local church through a missions agency called Reliant. As a ministry intern, I will be working in Estes Park, CO, and taking part in a Leadership Training Program where over one hundred college students from around the country will gather for the summer.

I will learn and lead in both evangelism — seeking to win people to Christ — and discipleship — building up Christians in their walk with Christ. This means developing deep friendships, studying the Bible, investing in small groups, worshiping in large group, and plenty of social activities. All the while, I’ll have the chance to learn from experienced full-time workers in campus ministry. I expect this summer will be a powerful investment of my time and energy as I train in gospel work. And I hope God will use this summer to show me whether full-time ministry is His calling for the rest of my life.

In order to make this possible, I need to develop a ministry team — a group of people who will join with Reliant to make my ministry internship possible. I am responsible to raise at least $(your support goal amount). In order to meet this need as quickly as possible, I am trusting the Lord to provide people who would like to invest gifts of $1000, $250 or $100. In the past, average gifts have ranged from $50 to $2500.

Mr. and Mrs. Johnson, will you prayerfully consider giving to Reliant to meet this need? I must complete my financial support responsibilities by (date). The giving process is easily done online at http://www.reliant.org/joe.staffer or by mailing a check to me made out to Reliant. By enabling me to attend this intern program, your gift will help me reach out to college students and will help influence people for Christ. I’ll give you a call in a week to see what you have decided, and I can answer any questions you may have then.

I appreciate your friendship. Thank you for your interest in my desire to serve the Lord in ministry this summer.
Sincerely,

P.S. I’m looking forward to talking with you when I call during the week of (date).
