Mission

RELIANT partners with missional churches and Gospel-centered ministries to mobilize support-based workers for the Great Commission.

SERVING THE CHURCH. MOBILIZING PEOPLE. INSPIRING CONFIDENCE.

Values

RELIANT is a deacon ministry, providing a service-oriented foundation for the mission of local churches and ministries.

In the early church, deacons were chosen as servant-leaders. They cared for duties that were essential, yet may have distracted from the frontline mission. (Acts 6:1-7). Reliant is modeled on this principle: to serve as a gospel ministry to promote gospel ministry. Further, as deacons are held to Biblical character standards—temperate, faithful, blameless—we believe we are as well. (1 Tim 3:8-12)

RELIANT advances God’s kingdom by empowering ministry partners.

The embodiment of the gospel is personal—Jesus Christ in human flesh. From Creation to Redemption, God has worked in and through people. We believe that investment in the livelihood of missionaries and pastors and their families is active investment in the Kingdom of God. (Ps 8:4-6; Acts 13:2-3; John 1:14)

RELIANT is committed to mobilizing Christian workers, including women and men of diverse backgrounds, cultures, nationalities, and ethnicities.

Spiritual leadership in doctrine and ministry methods works best when it flows from the local church and ministry. Reliant works in a sub-missional role, coming under local gospel vision. Our ministry processes, including our structured missionary assessment and fundraising coaching, are oriented to work in partnership with local leadership. Reliant does not direct in specific issues of doctrine or praxis.

RELIANT is committed to the highest standards of professional excellence, financial integrity, and stewardship.

Our internal financial controls, outside audits, annual reports and professional memberships ensure good stewardship and prudent business practices. While we are vigilant on the latest legal and regulatory standards, we know our challenge is even higher than laws can provide: excellence and integrity as an offering to our Lord and witness to the world. (Deut 25:13-16; Matt 25:21; 1 Pet 2:12-17; 1 Tim 3:3,7)

RELIANT is invested in the biblical, missionary-support model for giving.

In 2 Corinthians 8-9, Phil 4:10-20, Paul thanks believers for giving to apostolic work outside their local context and advocates further generosity. We see these as examples and the basis for today's missionary fundraising model, in which Christian individuals contribute regularly to missionary support. Other models of funding in the church, such as the tithe model for funding church staff, or the "tentmaking" bi-vocational approach, are also important Biblical approaches for funding ministry. However, Reliant exists especially for those missional contexts where a local tithe or funding is not available or sufficient, yet the gospel is needed just the same.

RELIANT is church-minded, honoring and coming under the Body of Christ.

Reliant was originally founded to provide missionary support to a church-planting approach for college ministries. We remain "church people," seeing the Body of Christ as the context for ministry and hope for the world. Church planting remains part of our DNA. While today we partner with a range of ministries and Gospel-centered non-profits, we expect our partners to honor the church as we do and that they build or support the church and not disparage or supplant it.  (Matt 16:18; 1 Cor 1:1-3; Rom 12:4-5)

RELIANT partners with those committed to the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the mission to make disciples to the ends of the earth.

Jesus’ Great Commission is our core and ultimate purpose. (Matt 28:18-20). We partner with those who are like-minded across the boundaries of doctrinal distinctives under the mission of the gospel. We are effectively “non-denominational”—our missionaries labor across a spectrum of gospel initiatives, new and established. Investment in evangelism, discipleship and church planting will always remain central to our mission. (Related: see our Statement of Faith)

  1. Sarah Swann Tom Mauriello Dave Meldrum-GreenMatt Elkins James Kaufman - I feel like Tom shared after the Nov board meeting that we changed a lot of these slightly to remove gospel-centered non-profits and some other tweaks but the Solomon page doesn't reflect these changes. This is an item on the audit Perm file list. Can someone please update this page and tag me and user-3b0b0 please? We would request you do this by 3/10/23

    1. Just emailed comparison doc

      1. I have updated this page to reflect the pdf above. Matt Elkinsand Tom Mauriello I was just curious why we are still using the term "missionary" on the 5th value, "missionary-support model for giving". We were telling the Central team to replace the M word with other approved terms. I just wanted to understand the why for using it here but not elsewhere. Thank you!  (FYI Kerry Housley)

        1. Hi Amber Blais , sorry to just reply; I was out last week on PTO. We avoid using the word "missionary" as a blanket title for our staff for a few reasons, and I am happy to share more, but here it is used to describe a model of support raising. We train our people to raise support through smaller recurring gifts from long-term invested partners rather than larger one-time gifts. That method is generally known as the "missionary model" of support raising.

With that said, we also want to be careful using that word from a security standpoint, so it is good to think about whether or not we use it in our mission, vision, and values. I'll make sure we reassess that, but for now, I think we are good to use it on this page. Thank you!

          1. Ok great, thanks Matt Elkins. Yeah I was just thinking of it from a public/external standpoint (like our website, printed flyers, etc.) and wanting to keep it consistent for whatever we are using across the board.

  2. Kerry Housley Sarah Swann I'm not sure what team "owns" this page but user-3b0b0is focusing her time on audit so could we assign someone on the Central Ops team to update this page with the attached file? Thank you!

    1. I think technically I am the space designer for this section of the FM. I'm happy to update this page for you Barb Seckler!

        1. This has been updated Barb Seckler. Tom has approved the changes as well.
