The following framework will help you understand how to respond in a crisis. Each crisis will be different, but internalizing the basic framework will help you to apply it as needed in most situations.
The first and most important step in any crisis is to secure life and safety. When a threat emerges, the priority is not business continuity, travel plans, or operational impacts. It is protecting people. This means immediately addressing any danger to employees, family members, contractors, or visitors by providing emergency assistance, contacting local authorities or medical providers, relocating personnel to a safe location, and activating shelter-in-place or evacuation procedures when necessary. The goal is to stop the situation from worsening, eliminate immediate hazards where possible, and ensure everyone is safe before moving on to the next phase of crisis response. This step can look very different depending on the situation.
While every crisis is unique, the principle remains the same: take decisive action to protect people first, then address everything else once safety has been established. Have all emergency numbers from your Crisis Checklist stored on your phone for immediate assistance. |
Once urgent threats to life and safety are addressed, determine the type of crisis and escalation that is occurring. This is important because different levels of crises will require different levels of involvement from Reliant. Keep in mind, you may need to jump to this as the first step. Especially if you are at a level 3 and there is no immediate concern for life or safety. In some cases, the potential for a incident is considered to be a Level 3 incident, meaning you will need to notify Reliant. |
