Section IV. ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

  • The overall area (from all angles) of the accident/incident scene. Start outside and work in. Include the final resting place of the vehicles in relation to the rest of the accident scene. 
  • If an intersection, all four (4) directions approaching that intersection. 
  • Basic four (4) sides of each vehicle. 
  • Close up of damage, or lack thereof, to each vehicle. Photos showing no damage are just as important as photos showing damage. Also include any damage to buildings, signs, etc. 
  • Skid marks, including a point of reference (such as a pen) for measurement. 
  • Any contributing factors (construction, road conditions, etc.) 
  • Any evidence that could be moved later. 
  • Temporary road or construction signs, traffic signals, etc. 
  • Any visible obstructions like trees and shrubs, signs, other vehicles, etc. 
  • License plate number of the other vehicle

Do your best to photograph any other issues that seem pertinent at the time.
