Reliant is committed to fostering a safe and healthy ministry environment for employees and for those to whom they minister. Therefore, it is beneficial for us all to be trained and educated on regular basis on best practices around child safety and workplace harassment and discrimination prevention, two areas that are essential for creating safe ministry and work environments. It also gives you a chance to review the policies that are related to these topics. Plus, some states require annual training on workplace harassment and this ensures that we are compliant with those state laws.

The Sexual Harassment and Discrimination Prevention course by Telios Teaches has been updated for 2021 with new content. The Abuse Awareness training by MinistrySafe is the same course that you took in 2020, but it is such a vital topic for churches and ministries today that the information that is covered in the course must remain top of mind for anyone who works with children, youth, young adults, or any vulnerable population.

Please see the Annual Required Education for Existing Staff for the full details.

The Sexual Harassment and Discrimination Prevention Course you complete is dependent on your supervisory or staff level:

  • Preventing Sexual Harassment & Discrimination in the Christian Workplace (length: 1.5 hours): Take this course if you do not have anyone reporting to you OR are not at a staff level of Pastor, Minister, Manager, or Director.
  • Quelling Misconduct: Sexual Harassment Prevention for Managers (length: 2.5 hours): Take this course if you supervise other Reliant staff OR are at a staff level of Pastor, Minister, Manager, or Director.

All employees must take the Abuse Awareness Course (length 1.5 hours).

    • For 2021, the Skillful Screening Course(length: 2.25 hours) is optional. This course may be helpful to you if you oversee a children's or youth ministry or if you are involved in interviews or the hiring process for staff or volunteers. If you would like to take the course and do not see it on your MinistrySafe home page, email learning@reliant.org.

For most staff, the training will take about 3 hours. For staff in supervisory or leadership roles, the training will take about 4 hours. All of the courses can be taken at the user's own pace and they do not have to be completed in one sitting. Here's more detailed information about the Required Education Courses.

titleWhy did Reliant select MinistrySafe as a vendor for New Staff Required Education training?

MinistrySafe has literally trained millions of church and ministry staff members and volunteers since its inception. After decades of litigating sexual abuse cases, Gregory Love and Kimberlee Norris founded MinistrySafe to help ministries meet legal standards of care and reduce the risk of sexual abuse by creating preventative measures tailored to fit the needs of churches and ministry programs. With over 50 years of combined experience in sexual abuse litigation, consultation, and crisis management, Love and Norris understand the risk of sexual abuse and how it unfolds in children’s programming. You can learn more about MinistrySafe here

You'll begin receiving communication to your Reliant email address the week of June 14. And you will have until August 15, 2021, to complete the steps listed at the top of this page. We challenge you to complete these steps sooner, rather than later. It's at least 3 hours worth of work

If you attended New Staff Training (NST) since January 2021 and completed the courses, you do not need to take them as part of the Annual Required Education for existing staff. All Reliant Staff that attended NST prior to January 2021 will need to complete them again as part of the Annual Required Education.

    a course on Child Safety?

We realize that not all of our Reliant employees and associates work directly with children under the age of 18 in their church or ministry. However, many do work with college-aged students, young adults, or other members of a vulnerable population who may be susceptible to grooming and abuse. The principles shared in the training can also apply to those groups. And even if you don't feel like what you learn about in the course is relevant to your day-to-day work, we hope the training increases your awareness of the issue and teaches you how to help recognize and prevent sexual abuse in any context that you may be.

The courses are available to you, your supervisor, and your ministry leaders (even if

they are not employed by Reliant

Reliant does not employ them). You will need to complete the course on your own. However, we encourage you to discuss as a team how this information and the related

    policy changes

policies may impact your ministry work.

This is especially applicable to staff who work with children and youth (ages 17 and under) or vulnerable adults as the Child and Vulnerable Adult Safety policy and guidelines is new for Reliant.

think I was assigned the wrong course. What do I do?

If you are not a supervisor or leader and took the Manager-level course, that's okay. You don't need to take the Employee version as all the content in the Manager-level course is in the Employee-level one.

If you are a supervisor or leader and took the Employee-level training, you will need to watch a few additional chapters. See below for instructions on how to do that:

Return to the Telios site and launch the Manager-level training.

Many of the “chapters” are the same, with some additional content in the Manager Level. So when you start the Manager-level course, and you begin a chapter that was in the Employer Level, you can just click the “Complete and Continue” button at the bottom to advance to the next chapter.

Highlighted in blue below are the additional Manager-level chapters so that you can see the chapters that you need to still view. Just don’t forget to take the quiz at the end of the Manager-level course to get full credit!

    Manager-level Content:

    • Ch. 1 Do Religious Organizations Need to Worry?
    • Ch. 2 Theology and the Secular Law
    • Ch. 3 Risks to Religious Organizations
    • Ch. 4 How Laws Apply to Religious Organizations
    • Ch. 5 The Definition of Sexual Harassment
    • Ch. 6 Organizational Policy & Procedure
    • Ch. 7 Policies and Reporting Mechanisms
    • Ch. 8 Investigation & Discipline
    • Ch. 9 Processing Compliants & Safety Plans
    • Ch. 10 Preparing for Investigation
    • Ch. 11 Internal Investigation Process
    • Ch. 12 Considerations When Dealing with Sexual Harassment
    • Supplement: Multicultural Work Places
    • Vignettes that cover actual situations
